  • If you were absent for our discussion on Tuesday, please contribute to our back-channel discussion & submit notes  with discussion questions/topics to Feliks. ​​

1. Literary 3 X 3
  • Write three sentences of three words each that capture the essence of the novel.  s
    • Use abstract nouns
    • No proper nouns
    • No “to be” verbs
    • No articles or pronouns
    • No repeated words
    • No cliches.
  • Write them on the board.  Vote for the most insightful one. 

2. Class Discussion 
  • Today, you will evaluate your partner's participation.  Take notes on how many and the types of comments they make to offer them feedback. 
  • After the discussion, share your notes with your partner.  Complete the self-evaluation for both discussions this week.

    • What the difference between a symbol/motif again? 
    • How to analyze these literary elements 
    • Brainstorm symbols/motifs we see in F. 451
      • With your partner, select a symbol or motif in the text and create a poster with: 
        • An Explanation for the layers of meaning of the symbol or motif.  Especially focus on how it connects to the overall meaning of the text. 
        • ​Quotations from the text ​to back up this reading. 
        • Design elements (illustration, font choice, etc) that support your message.

    • Do I have to speak out loud?  Yes--that's the goal.

  • What are our key understandings of Marx's ideas and what looking at a text through a Marxist lens really means.  Use QTI notes to discuss. 
  • Apply Marxist literary lens to your texts. 
    • What is the economic status of the characters?
    • What happens to them as a result of this status?
    • How do they fare against economic and political odds?
    • What other conditions stemming from their class does the writer emphasize (poor education, poor nutrition, poor health care, inadequate opportunity)?
