Goals:
  • I can use close reading strategies to understand a poem. 

Announcements: 
  • Please have a large Writer's Notebook and a binder by tomorrow. 
  • Reading Autobiography is due on Friday to Google Classroom.
  • We will select novels to read by Friday . Please be ready to make a decision and grab a book that you can start reading over the weekend. 

1. Book Talk:  Books about Growing Up (Also by Poets) The Bell Jar--Sylvia Plath & Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog--Dylan Thomas 

2. "Introduction to Poetry" by Billy Collins
  • First read--First impressions--using the sentence stems (or with images), write something about the poem. 
    • ​So I was sitting next to this poem waiting for the bus and it....
    • In this poem's pockets are....
    • This poem is hiding...
    • If this poem were a burrito, it would...
  • Second read--questions that come up.  Put them closer to the poem. 
  • Third read (Zooming In)--Can you answer any of the previous questions, or do more questions come up? Write notes even closer to the poem.
    • Is there one line or part that seems most important to you? Underline it!
  • Fourth Read--Select a person to read this poem how it should be read. Add some specific thoughts/annotations right next to the poem. 
    • Each person at the table contribute one true sentence about this poem, and then work together to order the sentences into a "paragraph"
  • Share our "paragraphs". 

3. Assignment:  Reading Autobiography due on Friday to Google Classroom. 

4. Exit Ticket:  Quick survey
  • Do you have access to a laptop that you can bring to class? Yes/No/Sometimes
  • Do you plan to take the AP Literature Test Yes/No/Maybe
