1. "Panopticism" ​ 
  • Go back to your original table.  Sort through the comments. 
    • ​What patterns emerge, and what seem to be outliers? 
    • Move the sticky notes into categories/patterns. 
    • Each table present a one or two sentence statement to the class on key patterns and insights. 

2. Language and Power in Handmaid's Tale
  • Link to the PDF if you don't have your book
  • Neologism? Ex.  "Unwoman" pg. 10 
  • Biblical language: “Not all of you will make it through.  Some of you will fall on dry ground or thorns.  Some of you are shallow rooted” (10).
    • What does Biblical language sounds like?   The Beatitudes. 
  • Language musings, “ladies in reduced circumstances” (8).
  • Select a chapter: 2, 4, 8, 11, 12, and 15, but others chapters would work as well and do a close reading looking for the three types of language choices.

1. Writer's Notebook:  Spotlight Sentence:"The moon is a stone and the sky is full of deadly hardware, but oh God, how beautiful anyway." --pg. 97

Write for 3 minutes on your first impressions, things you notice or find interesting. 
  • How would this sentence be different in a different order?  
  • Consider the connotations of the words. 

2. "Panopticism" 
  • Pick a passage from the text and write it on your table's poster. 
  • Have a silent conversation about passages in the room. 
    • Comment on the passage--
      • What does it mean? 
      • What connections do you make between the passage and other texts? 
      • What do you question or push back against? 
    • ​Comment on other's comments. 
      • ​Agree and add evidence or connections. 
      • Disagree respectfully and explain why
      • Ask a clarifying question. 
    • ​Draw lines between comments that connect.
