Goals:
  • I can demonstrate the difference between different tones.
I can analyze rhetorical devices to interpret texts from different perspectives and cultures.
I can reflect on my learning and self-assess my progress.

  • Mid-term self assessment (Mastery) due by Friday.  Sign up for a conference when you are finished.

  • Hyper-link poetry presentations due by Monday!

1. Shades of Tone
  • Tone, in written composition, is an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience.  Tone is generally conveyed through the choice of words or the viewpoint of a writer on a particular subject.
  • Bouncing into the room, she lit up the vicinity with a joyous glow on her face as she told about her fiancé and their wedding plans.

  • She lay on the couch in a white evening dress, whispering softly in the ear of her fiancé, running her fingers through her hair and gently nibbling his earlobe.

  • Bursting through the door, the flustered mother hollered uncontrollably at the innocent teacher who gave her child an F.

  • Gently smiling, her mother tenderly tucked the covers up around the child’s neck, and carefully, quietly, left the room, making sure to leave a comforting ray of light shining through the opened door should the child awake.

  • The laughing wind skipped through the village, teasing the trees until they danced with anger and cajoling the grass into fighting itself, blade slapping blade, as the silly dog with the golf ball eyes and a flopping, slobbery tongue bounded across the lawn

2. Workshop Time
  • Mid-term Self-Assessment
  • Hyperlink Poetry Project
